CAnt Log into XP after workplace change

Aug 22, 2007 5:58PM PDT

So, my dad gave me his old work laptop to use for my photography stuff.

I wasnted to transfer about 1G of apps/photos and various other files over via a wireless connection. i looked for a while on how to get my lappy and desktop to see each other. but after a while i gave up and gave it to my dad to figure out.

This was almost a year ago, so my details might be sketchy.

So, he tried setting up local networks and all that junk but it didnt work.

so he tried changing the workgroup.

that added a password that we cant get into. there was never a password on there before and now there is one. we have no idea what the password is and cant get into it... any way to take the pass off or reset the pass?

Its a Dell Lattitude NTFS Win XP

anything else i need to include let me know.

A password for what exactly?

The easiest way to transfer files between computers nowadays is to put them on a USB-key. You can get a 1 Gb one for less than USD 30, they easily last a few years and it saves a lot of trouble setting up a network. Just a tip for the future.

You missed my question in the subject line.

But if it's the XP user account password indeed, tylersmillers answer is quite helpful.

This week, I configured a new PC for a friend. And - just in case something happens with her own account - I made a second administrator account that should be accessible in such a case for an easy rescue operation. She hardly notices it, because I use TWEAKUI to set the machine to autologon to her account.
An elementary precaution when setting up a PC for 1 user. Having different user accounts when there's more than 1 user, of course, is even more elementary, but that might not be the case with you.

so if i understand the subject of your post: Cant login to Windows...
so the password is on the user account you are using. (correct)?

if the password is on the user account you are using, then log in as another admin and take the password off. If you are using XP Home, and there is no other admin account, boot into safe mode and log in as the default Administrator. there probably is no password on that. then just remove the password on your account.

other ways to transfer files is to save them to CD's or DVD's..

hope this helps.
