cant install harddisk

Hello

I'm trying to install a second hard disk into my 5 year old
Pentium 3 550 MHz. My original disk is 30 Gigs, and I'm trying to add a Maxtor 120 Gig harddisk as the secondary one. I dont have the full details right now because my friend tried the installtion for me. However the gist of the problem is this: Both hard disks are appearing on the bootup screen (the screen that first shows up when one restarts), the Maxtor 120 Gig as the slave, and the original 30 Gig as the master. However its not appearing under My Computer. To my knowledge the jumper settings are fine.

FYI I'm using Windows XP so the hard disk should be plug n play.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks
Dan:)

If it shows in the BIOS, then for XP it won't show until you partiton and format it.

Hint: Press Start, Help and Support, enter Disk Management or Drive Management.

"Windows XP so the hard disk should be plug n play." NOT!!
You still have to fromat the drive.
You need administrator rights.
Right click on my computer
Click on manage
Computer management window will open
About half way down on the left
Click the disk management folder
This will display the drives
Your new drive will be there, but blank
it should be drive 1, right click it
and it give an option to make it active
then right click and create a pariton
then right click and format the paration. John

In reply to: cant install harddisk

OK I've done that but cant figure out what to do next. If I right-click on the ''Disk 1'' field I get 3 options: Convert to Dynamic Disk, Properties, and Help. If I rightclick on the white field next to it I also get 3 options in which the first is different: New Partition.

When I first went to this menu a few mins ago, I dont quite remmber what I did now, but I somehow started a wizard which initialized my new disk. I think it gave an option to ''covert'' it as well, but since the default for convert wasnt checked I didnt do so either.

BTW I dont see an option to make it active.

Any ideas?

(NT) (NT) If it is the slave, you don't want to make it active.

FDisk and Format

Even after that, if you're using TweakUI, make sure the box is check under My Computer for that drive letter. Installed some optical drives, bios was fine but forgot to check TweakUI and Windows didn't see them. Just a thought.

Visit HD support website

In reply to: cant install harddisk

Did you buy a new HD kit, what came in the box along with the new HD? If so, usually some manual, s/w and maybe rails(screws), etc. will be present. Read it and proceed.
If not, then goto the HD support website, they have detail info that usually covers many situations, copy or d/l the info/software in order to print or read it. PLus, since you mentioned you have a 550Mhz system, the bios may not though the XP os will support the HD, so check to see the lastest(most current) bios update is installed. Otherwise some overlay s/w will help install the HD provided by the HD vendor or part of the process the vendor s/w will do for you. Try my suggestions if all else fails. PLUS!, I strongly suggest you deal with the new HD by itself installed, disconnect the old HD provided no other cures work. Before anything else, visit the HD support website, it may directly hit on your problem.
