Sounds right.

The connection is usually like this.

cable box -> receiver -> HDTV

So that works great until you need audio from HDTV -> receiver.

For that you need an audio path from HDTV to receiver. The usual connection is from the optical out from the HDTV to the receiver then configuring the menus on the receiver and HDTV.

For APPS it can get tricky as on the Samsungs I ran into, the APPS would not honor the setup of the HDTV and in the app you would have to find it's sound options to change it there as well.

i have hdmi out from xfinity to hdmi cbl/sat (denon)
I have hdmi2 arc from tv to monitor1 arc (denon)
I have optical from tv to optical digital tv audio in (denon)

I would think those are correct but am not sure of the settings inside lg and/or denon to make either the arc or optical work.

There will be two areas to setup.

The first is to get the TV to send audio over either ARC or Optical and then the Denon to use said audio.

It's tough but if you hear sound from the TV speakers that means the TV is not set right yet. Work that first. I'm not there to see what menus you see on the TV but once you find the audio screen look for options like external, optical, etc.
