Cant'get the 2263dx syncmaster to install properly

I am very frustrated with this, I am a computer programmer so I assume I do possess the minimal technical knowledge required.
I have been trying to setup the 2263dx, but if I follow the instructions, once the usb monitor driver is istalled, for some reason the little icon won't show up in the notification area, so I have no way to configure its behaviour.
And, which is the most frustrating, when I reboot, the main monitor (not the usb one) gets locked to a very low resolution and there is NO WAY i can change the resolution, I have to go back to the last restore point and start all over....
I am using a NVidia GeoForce 8800 GTS video adapter.

Thanks for any help. I am considering returning the product.
