Question

Can't disconnect Cpu connector from motherboard

Sep 10, 2017 1:11PM PDT

I am replacing my psu so first I have to disconnect all the power connectors.I was able to disconnect other connectors which I tried to disconnect, even the 24pin connector which some people have problems disconnecting.

But I am not able to disconnect the 4pin Cpu connector(connected to a 8 pin socket) from the motherboard.I tried squeezing the clip on the left side of the connector and pulling the connector at the same time but it didn't work.I tried to pull the connector using a pliers, no matter how much force I used, it didn't work(also tried squeezing the clip and pulling the connector using plier at the same time). I tried putting a screwdriver between the connector and socket to force to seperate them but it didn't work

I tried to disconnect it for hours but I wasn't able to seperate the connector from the socket even 1mm.

Here is a link to a pic of the motherboard and connector:

My pc's motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
Old psu is : Coolermaster Rp-600-Pcap

How can I disconnect this connector?

Since you don't have to save the old PSU.

You can clip the wires and solder the old PSU to this set of wires.

That's the safe exit as these connected can get welded on and we don't want to risk damaging the motherboard with more force.

The socket can be desoldered and a new socket installed but the easy way out is to cut the 4 wires, leave enough to work with and solder to the new PSU 4 pin wires.

It's not a new issue. https://www.techspot.com/community/topics/burnt-4-pin-12v-atx-connector-on-mobo.136137/

If you didn't get the LATCH to pull back, it won't budge.

Thanks for your answer.

Today although my father couldn't pull it up through his efforts with hands, he was able to pull it up using piiers, thankfully this didn't damage motherbaord. Another cable was also very stubborn, it was an extension cable for 4pin peripherial cable, after about 15 minutes and injuring my finger with pliers, I was able to seperate the extension cable connector from the peripherial cable.

The very next day.

I thought about a few stubborn plugs and thought about how I would grab it with pliers (you did that) and give the plug a slight twist being careful to be so slight that I don't sheer off the jacks.
