cant connect to neighbor's wireless

Aug 5, 2005 9:16PM PDT

hey...

my laptop came with a wireless card even though i use dial up. i had never used it, and my neighbor happens to have a network.

it prompts for a wep or something. i leave it blank and click connect. it says i am connected at three bars when i go on my porch.

i try to use the internet explorer but it doesnt work, nor AIM or shareaza.

what can i do?

You could ask your neighbor.....

for permission to use his paid for network. If agreeable, he would need to adjust the security settings of his router to allow you access.

But if the neighbor gave permission

wouldn't this likely be a violation of his service contract? In my case, I am allowed up to five connections on my premises; this does not seem to allow me to include a neighbor.

Another consideration: both parties would want to be sure their security settings will prevent any snooping by the other party.

Probably doesn't want you there....

With a wireless internet connection, it (kinda) works like this.

computer----->wireless router---->internet

Wireless routers have WEP's, a password of sorts to restrict unwanted users. Because you cannot provide a WEP, the router does not 'connect' to the internet.

Simply go to your neighbor's house and ask for his/her permission! The network is encrypted,........so when you leave the WEP field blank that means your not gonna surf! Technically, yeah you're connected but you're not going anywhere buddy.

oh and while you're at it you should ask him if he'll give you an extra set of keys to his car so you can use it when you want to go somehere.
