Cant change cartridges on Epson D78

i have an epson D78 printer, connected via USB. i'm running Win XP. I need to change the cartridges in the printer, however, when i lift the lid and press the cartridge button nothing happens. i have also tried pressing the cartridge button before lifting the lid, nothing happened. i turned the printer off from the mains and left it for an hour, incase it was confused. still no joy.
