That question has been around for the past 50 years.
Both companies make excellent DSLR cameras.
Choose either, you can't make a mistake.
As far as models - most people choose the model, based on the size of their camera budget.
There is no such thing as a featureless DSLR camera.
They are loaded with things that can help you with difficult photo situations.
Many people will buy a learning DVD for the specific model of DSLR camera they buy.
Just do a Google search for such a DVD and you will find many to choose from.
While you are learning more about your camera you can always use Auto Mode and not miss any photo opportunities.

Hello, I am looking for a good solid entry level or above entry level SLR. Sub-$1000. I am looking at either the Nikon D5000, or the D3100. The D3100 looks more solid, except the frames per second is 3.4 instead of 4 like the D5000. The fixed screen doesnt bother me.
As far as Canon, looking at the T1i, or T2i. Is the T2i really worth the extra couple hundred bucks? And are both models worth more over the nikon models? Im not looking for too simple of a camera, as getting used to nifty features is amongst my favorite thing to do, however I do want to dodge those very annoying features. What do you recommend?
