Question

Canon Vixia hv40 camcorder won't power up

Even with the electrical plug plugged in, camcorder won't turn on. The power light does not come on, and the LCD screen is black, and there is no power to the camcorder. I already hit the reset button, but that did not help.

I had an HDMI cable hooked up to a monitor to screen some video. Not sure if I shut the camera off before unplugging the HDMI cord? Could that have something to do with it?

Nothing user serviceable.

Get repair estimates. Consider the old unplug all things from the main unit and "spank it" (hammer on the Moon) fix.

Canon won't work on it

In reply to: Nothing user serviceable.

It's worthless now, canon will not repair a tape based model. The want you to buy a new tapeless model.

The jerks at canon said that I get a LOYALTY discount - a measly 40 bucks.

this blows!!

and so does canon.

The camcorder was simply sitting on the counterr and all of a sudden it's worthless and canon wont fix it.

I can maybe buy a used one at ebay.

Am I correct to assume you are kidding about, "spanking" it?

https://www.google.com/search?q=camcorder+repair+tape finds the usual repair houses but tech moves so fast that many get upset when the tech obliterates old gear. For me a smart phone works better than my old miniDV camcorder and certainly makes video transfer/edit a lot easier.

My lesson was to not get invested in any device. Be ready to move on and maybe skip a generation or two.

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the link to repair options. I didn't know there were other repair outlet options.

I'll get a quote

However a similar model to my odler vixia hv40 sells for only $500 although I am turned off by Canon models.

cell phone shoots hd

In reply to: This is where we dive into demands.

I was thinking the same thing, to just finish this project using my cell phone camcorder. It shoots 1080i by 1940 so its high def. I am not that technically knowledgable but if it's hd - hd is hd right?

Parts to the academy award winning movie, "Looking for Sugarman" was filmed w a cell phone - so they say.
