Canon Vixia HF200 / Panasonic SDHC Class 10 memory card

Feb 20, 2010 2:57AM PST

Just bought a Canon Vixia HF200 and a 16 Gb Panasonic SDHC Class 10 memory card (RP-SDW16G) from BestBuy. After initializing the card I tried to set-up the camcorder to MXP/FXP mode but the following message popped-up on the screen:"cannot record movies in MXP/FXP mode on this memory card". That's strange giving the fact that the card is rated up to 22Mb/s and the user's manual says that the camcorder has been checked and optimized for use with Panasonic, Toshiba and SanDisk cards and should be able to record in MXP/FXP mode on cards rated Class 4 or higher.
Anyone else having the same problem? Any advice? Should I return the card and try a different brand? which ones are compatible with this camcorder and allow a smooth and problem free transfer?
Thanks
PS: I sent a message to Canon technical support but I'm still waiting for an answer. If I'll get any meaningful advice from this people, I'll post it back.

SIMPLE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION...
Dec 15, 2010 8:59PM PST

The Canon Camcorder consumer line has been around since before the SDHC Class 10 SPEC existed, and therefore does not support it. Advertisements referring to certain models (i.e. HF S21, HF S20, HF S200, HF S11, HF S10, HF S100, HG21, HG20, HV40, HF21, HF20, HF200, HF R11, HF R10, HF R100; don't support ) having the ability uses SDHC Class 4 or higher (for MXP or FXP Full High-Def recording) was created before the Class 10 was created. So the statement was correct at the time of printing, but today it should say Class 4 to Class 6; which is probably why they don't sell those models officially anymore. Although, vendors still do without mentioning the Class 4 to Class 6 limitation and requirement for MXP & FXP modes. You would have to get a newer model like a CANON VIXIA M31 if you want Class 10 support. Hope that helps.

P.S. I learned that after purchasing the HF200 ($250) online then looking for the best memory card on bing.com. I thought I would be getting the Class 10 but I don't mind saving a few bucks on the Class 6. The main difference between the ULTRA cheaper HF200 and the M31 is 32GB internal memory, Class 10 compatibility, Touchscreen, and Optional 5.1 Surround Sound Mic Accessory... if you're into that kind of thing LOL.
