The "XP PRO AMD" brings up issues that most won't handle with ease. XP may or may not install the USB port drivers or filters and the result is some items may do exactly as you wrote and flumox the end user.
Your system supplier should help install whatever motherboard and USB drivers that are needed to make this work IF you are saying the scanner works on other Windows XP based machines.
In closing, the site http://www.usbman.com could be helpful, but without the make/model of the AMD motherboard I have to let you research which page to read.
I purchaced another canon scanner, and still have the same problem as before computer cant detect image device. have tried (1) changing USB ports (2) downloading driver from canon web site (3) hours of phone calls to canon (4) installing driver first then plug in scanner (5) pluging in scanner and letting the wizard do its thing but cannot find driver on cd and wants to connect to the internet (6)installing it on other computers(this worked)(7)device manager lists it as unknown.
Please help if you can. I am running XP PRO AMD 2600+ 512 mb ram & Canon lide 50 scanner
