(For the record, I own two Canon DSLRs, two Panasonic mirrorless cameras, one Olympus mirrorless camera, and one Sony point-and-shoot.)
But I also don't think those two cameras are really comparable. The SX50 has a much longer zoom, while the FZ200 has a much brighter lens. So I would choose based on which feature I needed more.

I have had a compact digital camera but am finally ready to upgrade to something more substantial in time for a trip to Italy next year. I have my choices down to the Canon SX50 HS or Panasonic Lumix DMX-FZ200. My dad (who is quite a shutterbug) says to go with Canon (Panasonic isn't known for cameras) but it seems the Panasonic is rated much better overall, even though it is $100 more.
I'd lean towards the Panasonic given its smaller size but I wanted to see if anyone else agreed with the brand argument.
