Canon SD400: lens will not extend at startup! E18 or not?

Nov 4, 2005 5:04PM PST

Hi all,

My 3-4 month old Canon Powershot SD400 seems to have some sort of problem. Pressing on for either movie or shooting mode, the Canon startup screen appears. Normally the lens would extend automatically afterwards, but now it will not. Instead, the Canon startup screen displays for about 5 seconds before 6 beeps are heard, and then turns off a couple seconds later.

I assume the lens is jammed because if I scrutinize that area I can see it has shifted a bit towards one side. I also am assuming that it is the infamous E18 problem, BUT the E18 error message does not appear on my LCD screen! Could this problem be different then?

If I tried the warranty, would they cover it, and how long would it take them to fix it? I purchased it from Dell.com...

Thanks for your help!

You should contact Canon Repair about having them fix the camera under warranty.

Reports show that they typically blame the owner for the problem (dropping, etc).

But lately, some reports show that being persistant can pay off. Be polite - but firm. It is their product, it is defective and it is under warranty.

Repairs usually take a few weeks.

with my 6 month old Sony, i hold down the power buttom to turn it on, it starts to turn on but the LCD stays black and the lens doesn't come out, then it goes beep, beep, beep and turns off.and when i look at the lens it looks as if it's bent to one side, even though i havent dropped it or knocked it. i called sony up yesterday and they said to take it to an authorized repairer and they'll tell me if it's covered by the warranty and what they'll do with it.

I have the powershot SD400. The first time I tried to turn it off, the lens refused to close; after that it wouldn't turn on in picture or movie mode, and the lens is stuck out.

Grr.
