Canon SD 200 & SD300 cracked LCD

Aug 12, 2005 4:27AM PDT

I purchased a Canon SD200 in December 2004. It's a nice point-and-shoot camera. The LCD recently quit for no apparent reason, looks like a little hairline crack across the screen (not the outside, but on the inside). My local dealer suggested I dropped or abused the camera, which is false. I kept it in a Canon-brand protective case 24/7, have never dropped it or jostled it unreasonably, and have been very careful with it. In fact, it still looks brand new, not a mark or scratch on it. My local Dealer indicated that Canon has to determine whether it was my fault or not. Upon doing a Google search, I discovered many other SD owners with the exact same complaint who did not get satisfaction through Canon. Any other SD owners out there have a similar experience? Do you know of any recourse for me in the event Canon refuses to fix it (other than small claims court), even though it's under warranty and I did nothing wrong? Thanks.

Just got my SD200 back from Canon - they did fix it at no charge. A note was included that basically gave me a lecture on how to take care of the camera so the lcd wouldn't break again. Maybe I should write back and let them know they need to make a sturdier lcd.

Canon SD200

It is good to hear that Canon has gotten off of its hard-nose stance on this issue.

Which corner (when facing the LCD) of the LCD had the break?

SD200 Cracked - lower right-hand corner

The tiny hairline crack was located in the lower right-hand area of the LCD, and had started to travel up and left toward the center of the screen. There was also a small blob in the lower right-hand quadrant, hanging on the hairline crack. The outside screen was not damaged, this was underneath the outer screen. Have you had a similar problem?

Having worked in a manufacturing environment at one time, it is quite possible that such damage can be the result of a manufacturing or assembly problem.
If so, the damage is likely to occur at the same location on the LCD.

Just gathering information.

If I see any more reports of this damage, I will enquire as to the location of the damage.

Canon SD300 crack

I have experienced the same. The crack is on the right side of the screen and about in the middle vertically. I would think it would have to be a malfunction on Canon's part because most of the posts I've seen insist on no abuse.

SD550 crack

Same story as a lot of people. I take very good care of my cameras. I had a sd100 for 5 years or something. And a Canon G2 and had no problems ever with anything and no LCD cracks. Had the SD550 for 1 month. Kept it in a padded case. Had it in the case and insided a soft jacket overnight. The next morning it was cracked - inside the LCD, lower right corner to midway up the right side - with the purple blob. I am going to send to Canon and hope they repair for free.

Same Problem

I have had my camera for less than a month and I am very careful with it. I have the same crack in the LCD screen, right side, purple blob with cracks going across the screen. Seems kind of odd that the same crack occurred in the same spot on so many different cameras.

Have you had yours repaired yet? I don't know whether to send it to Canon for repair or take it somewhere else. Any advice???
