IMO, the two are about equal in photo quality. The SX230 offers 1080 vs. the SX130's 720...whether there is an actual improvement I do not know (numbers are not as important as actual performance). They both offer P/A/S/M controls. So it mostly comes down to features. The SX230 has quite a few more, some which I think would be useful...but it cost quite a bit more.

How about SX220 HS

The SX220 HS and SX230 HS are identical except that the SX230 has GPS (Global Positioning System).

Many people find that GPS is handy for some situations.
But it comes with a penalty. With GPS turned-on, your battery life is cut in half.

SX220 HS

The SX220 HS is a European model. It is available for purchase online, but it actually costs more, and in all likelihood is a grey market item that does not come with a USA warranty.
