Dots and pixels are used interchangeably. You can shoot RAW or JPEG simultaneously. Your best bet in comparing the two cameras is to read the much more comprehensive reviews done by imaging-resource.com.

Me again. It's a different subject and I didn't want to confuse threads.
You recommended the Canon G11 or G12 because a value for me is shooting macro. I'm almost sorry I checked them out. Either seems wonderful but they're like wishing for a dessert you see in a closed bakery. Unfortunately I'm really, really stuck with a budget stretched to the max beyond my original $300 limit for a camera I can count on for better results in the long run. I'm pretty sure the decision is between the S90 and S95 now.
Here are some concerns.
1. Why are both the older 90 model and updated 95 version the same approximate price? Is there a trade off of options I can't figure out? Your advice seems to indicate an upgrade (for the same price).
2. After reading the threads on CNET, I see that newer cameras sometimes give up picture quality to make room for all the extras that have to be jammed into the working space. That's why I like the idea of 10MP for both 90 and 95 without all the extra pixels that sometimes make for a vicious circle of technology to deal with resulting graininess. I don't think I'd be a fan, like the photographer on flickr.
I'm not that interested in shooting video, BUT if I have the option, I wonder if I'll go nuts with it? If that's the case, is it stupid NOT to go with the S95 and its HD, or is that one of the options impacting potential picture quality?
3. Under LCD Pixel comparison on the Canon site, the S95 stated:
Approx. 461,000 pixels
The S90 Stated:
Approx. 461,000 dots
Are dots and pixels the same?
4. RAW and JPEG
Here's where I'm really confused.
Does the camera record in jpeg and raw at the same time?
If not, can I shoot in raw and convert several photos (of a series or occasion) to jpeg in a batch operation, or do I have to work with each one in a photo editing program, which I don't have?
5. Last. Does the S95 have any real problems, not the ones managed by a photographer's growing experience with the options?
Thank you, zippy
