Canon Powershot S1 IS

Apr 27, 2005 4:21AM PDT

Hi friends:

I am looking for a 1) good camera for prints
2) price range of 300 - 350 $
3) with a zoom of greater than 5 x
4) good video recording
5) canon/ nikon (traditionally good lenses).

I have cornered by search to Canon powershot S1 IS. I know that S2 IS is gonna be out in a few weeks but it will be a little pricey for my budget. I am satisfied by the reviews and users' opinions of S1 IS.

I have a doubt here - it is only 3 MP. So, how big a print will be good with 3 MP. One of my friend suggests only a 5 MP will be good even for 4 x 6 prints.

Questions:

1) What are your suggestions on the 3 MP for prints and how big a print can we get with 3 MP camera?

2) What is your suggestion on buying Canon S1 IS?

Please suggest/ advise. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Megapixels and print size:

This subject usually brings lots of opinions.

So here is what PC World magazine has to say on the subject:

http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,115656,00.asp

...........

The Canon S1 IS camera was not a big seller because it came out just as other camera makers were raising the megapixels in their long lens cameras.

I never read any complaints other than megapixels.

It does produce the best looking videos that I have seen.

If you are satisfied with 3 megapixels, the S1 IS is a good choice.

i have had one since xmas and enjoy it, i do 8x10's all the time, from what i've read that's about the limit..be sure and check out the lens adapters at www.lensmateonline.com, they are WAY better made the the canon junk...the only problem you will have with any big barrel camera is auto-focusing in dark rooms, but you can set camera to work around it...check out forums at steves and dpreview for work arounds, if you get one, becareful with the pop up flash, DO NOT try to open it by hand...good luck
