Canon Powershot A700 or A540?

by thegovnor / July 3, 2006 2:45 AM PDT

I'll be buying my first digital camera and based on the reviews I've read these two cameras seem to be the best in the compact $200 - $300 range. I'm having trouble deciding which camera is better. If i could get some feedback from any a700 or a540 owners I'd really appreciate it!

Well my problem started because these cameras are very alike. However, that link does lay it out very nicely. The A700 looks to be the better of the two to me and doesn't weigh that much more than the A540. If anything I'll just see how it feels in my hand. Thanks!

It would have been nice to hear from A700/A540 users (ahem) but I may just have to learn for myself. I guess that's why they have the user reviews huh? Too bad most of them are written shortly after the purchase. On to camera fun... Happy

A700 vs. A540 difference important to some...

One thing to consider if you're a scuba diver (or just like to snorkel), the A540 has an underwater scene setting and an underwater housing available, whereas the A700 does not. Given the choice of an underwater housing and setting instead of a 6x zoom, the A540 works for me as a diver. Especially since I've got an old Panasonic DMC FZ-10 with the long lens for telephoto shots.
