Canon HG10

by skatewillthee / December 21, 2008 1:17 PM PST

This is my mom's camera but she wants me to upload some footage but I have no idea how to. I have a mini dv camera but is easy to upload. If someone can help me learn this I would appreciate it. Thanx.

Upload to computer ?

Very basic steps: Use a "Firewire" to connect the camcorder to the computer. Start the camcorder in Play/Edit mode. If you have Windows XP, Windows Movie Maker will pop up... If not, start it and select capture video at the File menu...

This is an HDD camcorder, hence no Firewire.

To the OP: Use USB to connect it to the computer and use the software that came with the camcorder. If not, use Google to find a program for converting the .m2t files to something useful by Windows Movie Maker or the like.

Once they are copied to your computer, download that AVCHD conversion program (or use a compatible program) to open the files for editing. Then convert to the necessary format to upload.

When you plug in the camcorder, it will appear as an external hard drive in My Computer. Open up the drive and find the .m2t files and transfer them to your computer, making sure you have plenty of space available.

to be sure it does not run out of power during the file transfer. If that happens, the file won't have an "end of file" marker, will be "corrupted" and the video editor (or player) won't be able to deal with it. It is also possible (though unlikely) to corrupt the file still in the camcorder if power is lost during this copy process.
