I doubt you will get the same experience with Canon USA.
Canon Canada has repaired my PowerShot A70 for FREE...It was showing the dreaded E18 error message so I contacted Canon. They referred me to an authorized repair shop but when I inquired they told me that it will cost me at least $150 to repair. I complained to Canon Canada and told them that their product is expensive and faulty...They told me to send it to their Service Department for inspection. After THREE weeks I got it back, cleaned and repaired for FREE.
I think if we assert our consumer rights, we can get Canon to repair all these defective cameras even after the warranty period (Mine is already almost 2 years old). It worked on mine, and if they still ignore us, we can always take a class action suit...
P.S. I told them that they better recall all PowerShot cameras, try to perfect the design before releasing any newer version. They did listen so don't despair, don't knock down your camera, don't open them at all (coz then they could blame you for the damage)...It's CANON's responsibility to repair these miserable digital cameras...
