Canon digital camera USB connection

Feb 6, 2004 8:46AM PST

I want to purchase an ASUS MB (P4S800) with onboard USB 2.0 ports. I have a Canon digital camera (A70) that I can only connect to a USB 1 port. I have a SIIG RAID controller with four USB 2.0 ports on it and the camera does not function (it fails during the detection process)when connected to it. The Canon website says USB 2.0 operation is not guaranteed. Can one or all of the USB 2.0 ports be set to act as 1.1 ports so I can still connect my camera? How do I do this? Any help with a workaround would be appreciated.
Thanks
Blake

Having used many USB 1.1 devices on USB 2.0 ports I can say that this has never been an issue. What I always run into are people who move a hard disk with OS to a new system and get to sort out motherboard drivers and more.

http://www.usbman.com covers this topic here and there.

In direct answer to your questions: No and I don't know.

Mr. Proffitt
Thanks for the quick reply. My system is a clean install with the RAID controller (Win98SE). The motherboard(ASUS P3B-F) has USB 1.? controllers onboard and the camera is detected and works fine using these. If I connect through the USB 2.0 ports on the SIIG RAID controller it never makes it passed the detection. I get some overlapping cursors with hourglass rapidly flickering. Must reboot or end task msgsrv32 to continue. My wife uses the camera alot and will be upset if she cannot connect to download her pictures. I have posted at the USBMAN site with the same answer you gave. Any other advice would be appreciated.

Not enough to work with.

A clean install of Windows would not get the drivers proper.

That's my only clue here that the OS install is incomplete. Microsoft does not supply an OS that we can clean install and use.

I am sorry I do not understand your reply. I installed Win 98SE on the two drives after the controller BIOS set up the RAID set. I then Installed the drivers that come on the controller CD. I have an HP 2175 multifunction connected through one of these USB 2.0 ports and it functions flawlessly. But when I try to connect the camera it never completes the recognition. It only works when I connect through the motherboard USB controllers. So I do believe that the OS install is complete and the drivers are installed properly. Could you explain your comments a little more?
thanks

Did you try hot swapping the camera? Try that to see if the system try to recognize it.

Some USB 1.1 boards might work.

But it is well known that Microsoft and 98se will not on its own install completely on all machines.

If you want to debate this, that's OK, or do you want to tackle the issues and supply the machine's make/model and if self-made, the motherboard make and model.

I was just asking for clarification. I understand that you have much more experience than I at troubleshooting these types of problems. The motherboard I wish to purchase is the ASUS P4S800 with a 2.4 Gig P4. My present configuration is an ASUS P3B-F motherboard PIII 500 Mhz 786 meg ram Win98se. The Raid controller card is a SIIG JU-NNBR11. The USB 2.0 controller on the card shows as an NEC controller in device manager. Give me an idea of the type of information you want to know
Thanks

My Canon Digital camera works perfect with my USB 2 port, but it is an older Canon that only supports USB 1. Wonder if it is really the camera!!!

The thing is, living with a problem like this is really a no brainer. They make so many different memory card readers at such low prices that you should just buy a reader. They have 8 in 1 readers selling for under $25 (many under $20) and with these you can much more quickly offload your pictures.

A quick check at Google brought up this site for example
