Canon A95 vs Nikon 5400

Apr 7, 2005 1:36PM PDT

Please help me choose between the Canon Powershot A95 and Nikon Coolpix 5400. I don't know much about camera, but need one that can take good indoor and low light pictures (for pictures of children, family dinners, ect.)and occasional travel pictures. I have a Panasonic Lumix LC43, but the indoor pictures are very poor, probably due to low range flash?

I can only affort a camera around $350 at this time. I am torned between the Powershot A95 that has good review, and Coolpix 5400 currently has a $200 rebate. Are they comparable? Which would be a better buy? Is there another camera I should consider? Thanks in advance for all the advices.

Canon A95 and Nikon 5400

An interesting comparison.

The Nikon is actually in one class above the A95.
It was built to compete with the Canon G5 and Sony V1.

The 5400 is a quality camera with a metal body.

But....it is getting to be a little long in the tooth.

While the 5400 has more featues and has more sturdy construction, the A95 has better performance.

The shutter lag on the A95 is about average (0.6 second) while the 5400 has a shutter lag of 0.9 second.

One of the weak points of the 5400 is low light performance. It has difficulty in achieving an automatic focus lock in low light.

The Canon A95 has a 14 foot coverage with its flash.
This is a bit above the average for that type of camera.

Re Advice on A95 vs Nikon 5400

Thanks for the response. Looks like I will go with the A95 since it might be what I need. I forgot to ask for opinion on Canon S1 IS. Do you have any comments on the Canon S1 IS vs A95 and Nikon 5400 for my need?

Canon S1 IS

The S1 IS is a great camera if you only need 3 megapixels.

But......something is afoot right now and no one knows what is going on.

Many stores have run out of the Canon S1 IS and can not get more.
There is no word or rumors that Canon has a replacement in the wings.

I would not rush into buying the S1 IS until I knew what was going on.
