A closer comparison would be the Canon A520 and the Olympus D595.
Newegg.com shows that both cost about $245.
The A520 is 4 megapixels and 4X zoom.
There is no difference in picture quality between the A510 and A520, but the A520 shows a bit more detail due to the extra megapixel.

Manual focus is handy in a few situations.
But is difficult to use on small cameras.

The Canon A510/520 cameras have more important manual controls:
Shutter Priority
Aperture Priority
Program Mode
Manual Mode

The Olympus is a point and shoot camera, with few manual controls.

If you need a camera to take good photos and don't care about learning the mechanics of photography, the Olympus camera is fine.

If you want to get more involved in photography, the Canon cameras would be a better choice.
