Resolved Question

Cannot update new install of XP

Oct 27, 2013 7:22AM PDT

I have restored my old Acer netbook to its original factory settings. It has a version with SP3 installed.
After the reinstallation, I click start/window update and then on Microsoft's site, I click "Express" and then I get the message "Checking for the latest updates for your computer" but nothing downloads.
Anyone has a suggestion?

Please Try These Steps..

Microsoft's Knowledgebase article about it is below. Follow their suggestions.:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

And if that doesn't get it done, then try this:

Re-register all the Windows Update DLLs with the commands below

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Attempt to run Windows Update

Hope this helps.

For 2 days, I tried to download the updates and couldn't get them. Then I left town for 2 days leaving the netbook on, I just came back now and the updates have all been downloaded while I was gone, so case is solved. Thanks for answering my post.

Hi Grif
Nov 13, 2013 9:23AM PST

I am having the same problem and I followed ur steps. All were ok, except the regsvr32 wups2.dll came back as not found.

When I went to update, anyway, I finally got an error: 0x80190194

Can you help me with this. I had to restore because I lost everything. I haven't been able to update either.

I need to because I can't get the sp3 which I need to get other programs to work e.g. itune, MSE for virus and more.

Respectfully submitted,

Windows XP SHOULD Have "wups2.dll" in C:\Windows\System32...
Nov 13, 2013 11:51AM PST

...and if it's not there, that explains why you can't update... It's also located in the C:\Windows\System32\Software Distribution\Setup\Wups2.dll folder.Try typing the command again...or try doing a manual search for the file in the location I've given.. If it's not in the System32 folder, by itself, then you need to get it there by copying if over from the Wups.dll folder or by using something like System File Checker.

And just a note, instead of using Windows Updates to install Service Pack 3, you might try downloading the full, offline installer from the link below... It's a large download but once on your computer, running the installer should update you to SP3. In fact, installing it may correctly place the wups2.dll file where it belongs.

Hope this helps.

Hi Grif,

I just wanted to let you know that I tried the 2nd option and can not update through that link.

I will try to locate the folder you indicated in option #1 and see how I make out. I will keep you posted, just need a day or so being I am feeling sick again, I get sick alot. Sorry, I have RSD and it takes me longer to do things.

Not sure how this site works being I am new to it but please don't close this convo out and give me the day or so to get back to you.

And, please give us more information about your specific computer.. Make and model number? Age of the computer? Whether you've scanned with good antispyware tools such as Malwarebytes, etc.?

Remember XP is falling out of support.

You can try setting the DNS manually to Google DNS numbers as well as updating IE manually. There can be other causes such as someone installed an antivirus such as Norton. When you restore it could install Norton, automatically expire and Norton pulls a thuggish maneuver on you by blocking the internet for your safety.

Sorry Symantac but such thuggish behavior has me writing this over and over and you haven't shown any sign of change or remorse.
