Cannot Startup

May 15, 2004 7:40AM PDT

550 P111 Win 98se , IE/OE6 ,eTrust antivirus ,Sygate firewall , 128 RAM .
On start up I get ? Error loading PDBot.exe. You must re-install windows .? Google tells me this file belongs to Power Defrag which I just loaded yesterday.( It didn?t work and I used my normal with 98 programs to do a scan + defrag through Safe Mode and shut down for the nite)I found the file in System .ini - the line reads ?shell=PDBot.exe.(I used my boot floppy to get there)
I think ,if I could delete that line or part of it , I would be able to boot normally and delete the program. I don?t know how.
I think you have to change the progam in wordpad and return it to its proper place(if you could get into the ,puter.
Help to get out of this mess would be greatly appreciated - I was in the process of replacing all my programs after a format and am a bit reluctant to do another one.

Thanks for your direction . I read through some of your references and decided it would be easier to do a format.I am now back up and running .
The refs involved a printout of 8 pages but , if I can sort it out I will be the better off for it !
Again , thanks !

About the second reference noted a one line change in system.ini

From memory it was something to put ...

shell=explorer.exe

rather than the power defrag entry...

What's hard about this is that many can't edit files from a dos boot disk, and you are right that some 8 pages of printouts about how to make a boot disk, how to get an editor on such and how to use such might be just about right.
