Cannot start up my computer

May 10, 2004 8:53AM PDT

550 P111 Win98se,IE 6 ,128 MB ,10Meg HD ,Etrust antivirus,Zone alarm pro firewall,Adaware , Privacy Guardian .
Sent email from hotmail,Shaw webmail and OE6.
Updated Adaware and ran a check and cleared the 4 items it found.
Ran Privacy Guardian and got Error "The system is dangerously low on resources!Would you like to terminate the following application ? Ca (not responding ".The only CA I know stands for Computer Associates.I clicked yes and got a blue screen, then a black screen and eventually had to switch off at the computer.
On start up the computer stalled at :"The following files are missing or corrupt:
C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
C;\WINDOWS\DBLP.SYS
C;\WINDOWS\IFHLP.SYS
Type the name of the command Interpreter e.g.,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM I typed it in at the"C>"and clicked enter and got another C>.
I then rebooted to Safe Mode but arrived at the same place .
I then rstarted with one of my startup floppies and went to help but did notunderstand how to carry out the instructions ! I suspect the missing files are in the CD I got with my computer but how do I access them to replace the missing or corrupted ones?
Any help would be greatly appreciated but please keep it slow and simple !
In preview the smilies should be backslashes & I don't know why they are there?!!

Fsuf,

The damage that you have experienced may be due to a number of things, including spyware or viruses which infect the "msdos.sys" or "config.sys" file, etc. or a physical memory problem requiring new RAM, or similar. In the long run, it may be less time consuming to do a full reformat and reinstall of the operating system and all programs.

It may be possible to recover by using the links below to trouble shoot the problem. You'll need a "write protected" Win98 boot floppy:

Err Msg: Missing Himem.sys. Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory and that its location is correctly specified in your CONFIG.SYS file.

HIMEM.SYS, DBLBUFF.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS.SYS missing WIN98

Re: .SYS, DBLBUFF.SYS and IFSHLP.SYS are missing

Himem.sys missing or corrupt:

Hope this helps.
