Cannot start Microsoft Outlook etc. Can anyone help???!!

Feb 26, 2008 8:17PM PST

I have this error: 'Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.'

Can anyone walk me through some fixes? I can't follow people's advice as they assume everyone has detailed tech knowledge. I don't, and utterly depend on outlook for work! Please help!

Outlook express personal folder (outlook.pst) repair
Feb 26, 2008 9:49PM PST

I fixed the issue (Outlook 2003 on Vista) with some technical assistance. I used the inbox repair tool at C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033. The file to scan is located at: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

I tried searching for solutions on the net for hours, but I couldn't locate the outlook.pst file. I needed to be walked through how to show hidden files and extensions etc in order to locate the file, in order to scan and repair it. This information was not shown in any forum.

I hope this is of some use to others with the same issue.

Thanks for replying Bob

Because you have a network connection...

The PST could be on the server. There would be no PST to repair.

MOST WORKPLACES don't put the PST on the machine but I would be guessing about your workplace setup. The IT staffer needs your call. It could be as simple as a bad connection in the server room or a reboot of the Exchange Server.
