No. There is no single cause or cure for this one but this link seems to catch the most common.

I have tried repeatedly to set Word as my email editor in Outlook 2003 for XP Proffessional.
When I enter the Mail Format window in Options, the "Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit email messages" check box is there, but it is greyed out and I'm unable to click.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks, but I don't plan on clicking on any random links.
Does anyone else have any ideas? There has to be a way to fix this from within either Word or Outlook...
The fixes in the link provided are ones I've used. Also I've had to use all but one of the cures noted in said discussion.
Every once in awhile a member thinks there is a "cure" for an issue and misunderstands that this issue has more than one cause and therefore more than one cure.
Since I don't duplicate ready web content (takes more of my time) I just offer prior discussions when possible.
Your choice here.

this can be solved inside Word and/or Outlook?
And what's wrong with doing a repair install of MS Office or registering a few dll's manually?
