Cannot send messages in Windows Live

I am having problems with Windows Live messages on my laptop (Vista Business OS, SP2) where I can receive but no longer send or reply to messages. My Windows Live ID uses my UK BT internet account (rather than Hotmail) and I mainly use Yahoo webmail which will still send in Yahoo webmail. Nearly 2 years ago I linked my Yahoomail account to Windows Live using the correct POP3 and SMTP mail settings to pick up all Yahoomail messages. This has been working until last weekend. I have changed the SMTP and POP3 port settings as a trial cure but with no success. So I googled for a Microsoft UK direct phone line and came up with what I believed at the time was Microsoft but is actually a Microsoft Gold contractor who charges to fix the problem after asking me to install and run their software, which strangely detected a corrupted Windows Live? In order to fix it at their end, they wanted my credit or debit card details to proceed and control my screen.
