Question

Cannot see cloned 840 Pro connected to USB port

Apr 8, 2016 10:16AM PDT

Hi,
Windows 8.1. I have an 840 Pro x 256 SSD and keep a cloned copy on another 840 Pro x 256 SSD.
Both drives run perfect I just swapped the cloned drive into the machine which is an HP DV7.
In Device manager, all that shows up is the USB device the extra cloned drive is plugged into, and in "My Computer" it does not show this drive but will show anything else that is plugged into the USB. I updated the driver of the USB device but it said I had the latest driver.
In Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management it shows the drive as drive 1 and has the same 3 partitions as the drive 0 and reports as healthy.
I need to access this drive via USB and am at a loss to do so.
Thanks for any help I am guessing it is a simple problem.

Answer
I've had to boot a Live Linux to see some drives.

I noted this long ago at http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

I can't guess why it doesn't have a drive letter in Windows but would never fix that as I may upset the drive and it would no longer boot.

PS. There are newer Live Linux distros and like before, none have me install or learn linux.

I don't want to boot off from it I just want to access it and grab some data I put on it before I swapped it out of my notebook. It boots fine if I put it back in the machine tho. Odd, any stick or camera I plug into the USB shows up in My Computer as a drive letter.
I don't know anything about Linux.
Thanks for the reply !

As noted, nothing to know about Linux.

It's just boot this and explore the drives. This advice has been handed out for over a decade and time after time, no one has had to learn Linux.

Ok I get it.....that is interesting. I will keep that in mind if I cannot get this to work like it is supposed to work.
Thanks Robert.
