hi, i just tried many times to rum the trend micro the housecall on line scan, but everytime the same error message show up saying there was error in my system and cannot complete the transfer of data to run the scan, any advise on this? the internet security I use are Zone Alarm, ad-aware, cwshredder, spybot, spyware blaster, AVG, (they are all free version), I also checked all the security settings are adjusted to medium level... I still cannot figure out why only my pc cannot run the house call... any advise would be appreciated... thanks

Hi, Cindy. I'm No Expert but A Couple of Ideas Occurred....
Dec 14, 2005 2:26PM PST

to me. The North American Housecalls is done via Active-X download & scan. Many AV/Security progs, rightfully consider A-X to be a security threat and, will block. Norton is famous for this (don't want any competitor gettin in). I note you have AVG. If its' residential guard scan is functioning, is this the equivalent of 2 AVs running at one time? That is normally a no-no. You could try (AFTER reaching download page) IF a secure page, disabling AVG CC during the dwnld/scan/removal process.RE-ENABLE BEFORE leaving page? Sounds risky. Would avoid 2 AV conflict.
Several MS patches have upped the security settings in Internet Options. I wonder if active- X download settings are excluding the download ? Check Int. Options>security tab>custom level. Maybe Housecalls doesn't get recognised as "signed Active-X" or as "safe to run" ? You could try copy & pasting Housecalls URL into the "safezone" for the time being or perhaps change some of those settings to "prompt" so they'll ask you if you want to allow.
Have you got Spybots "Tea Timer" running? Could it be stopping needed setting changes to allow dwnld?
I've only used the European Java based scan(with Mozilla browser) on this new machine and it ran ok without turning off anything. If you're using Sun Java(not MS) for IE, I beleive you could also use the European Java Scan. Available Here:
http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/enterprise/products/housecall_launch.php
I could be way off base with all these ideas.
I also wonder if SpywareBlaster("prevents installation of "Spyware")/SpywareGuard (if you have also)could be blocking.
Last question: Are you actually reaching the site and all goes well until you click "scan"? If not, has a trojan entered Housecalls into your hosts file preventing access?
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will jump at something here and correct any ideas I've got wrong or that maybe too risky. Patience & G'Luck! Happy

here is how the problem solved

hi all, frist thanks for Tobeach reply, I adopted the simplest way you suggested and by click the UK user link and the housecall run through the san without problem, that's good it also did not found any threads in my pc Happy so my suggestion to the others also experienced the problem is, it might be worth to try to run house call from other countries trendmicro link, it helps me hope it helps you too...
by now, I am wondering is it safe for my pc only rely on the free internet security software ? I tried Symantec Noton before , my own oppinion is it charged far too much for the product value itself. My question is are those avaliable for free software (like those in my first post)are they as good as those require paid subscribtions? anyone has some thoughts or experiences please share with me, Have a good one Wink

Glad the Java Housecall Did It For You. It's Much.....

quicker to boot, since it doesn't have to, in effect, download an entire AV program plus all the def updates.
Re: Free !! I'm a big supporter of Free. All I use( except OS) are free and have been very happy with results for 3 or 4 years now. I have suffered 1 trojan in that time( unpatched exploit). I had 3 viruses in 6 months with Norton before AVG6 Free. I have seen many dozens of of Virus/Trojan E-Mails in my Hotmail, and they're ALL Live !! Doesn't seem to matter if Hotmail scanned them w/ Symantec or McAfee. Same story !!
The main advantage I see to some pay ones is the (supposed) tech support. Seen many complaints of it being useless when needed. Some include extra features/ services. Some of the service is quite good. Some like BoClean, started w/ free product, with free support for life and then (when the # of customers became very large, all with free support) couldn't afford enough staff to continue adaquate service.
My MAIN feeling is: If you want/need/& are willing to pay, then you should give the business to those same companies that have served you so well with their free product. Example AVG(I beleive currently the largest AV in Europe). Would be nice to have tech support if needed & of what little I have seen, theirs gives v. good service. Adaware (their Plus & Ad-watch) are usefull if needed. In cases like this, the payers reward them for & encourage them to continue to support their free programs (particularly if you tell them that "free" convinced you). Patrick at Spybot can always use more money, he puts it to more staff & better product.
We need people of this caliber to remain in the feild and when it comes to fighting on our behalf against the
quickly enriched rip-off artists. the costs of defending himself & his product are very expensive.
Luckily we still have a fair # of these white hats around, usually identified by the unthreatening "please donate" on their sites and statements that product is comletely free of adware/spyware. If we leave them near broke, it's much harder to say "NO!" when M$ or Norton come around wanting to buy you and take you off the market.
With the legit programs boards like this recommend, there is enough variety to keep you safe & happy.
Works for me !!! Grin

Very throughtful, I agreed with you

G'day To Beach!!, sorry for the late reply, just been away for awhile, totally agreed with you on your last post, my curiosity is why those free internet security software do not charge even just few dollars for the downloads, I am not fussy on the service (Norton I used before they charged around 70 bucks a year and the service not that great, and they have the not so outstanding product in my oppinion that slowdown my computer, I think it was because the norton internet security softwares all run the same time) but so far the free security softwares do not have such problems, since they are all individually downloaded and runed, the only concern is are they really that secure engouh (there is no free lunch?) but they are free (thinking if one seriouse virus attack the whole pc need to be reinstall can be a really big job) otherwise, the free softwares are almost perfect !!!

There Is Something Profitable in Freeware: Improved....

reputation and much wider Prodct Name Recognition for the company and it's pay products; with excellent "Buzz"! Even those without a pay version gain fame and exposure in the computing world.
Additionally, it true that everyone having good, updated AV (free or not) is like an inocculation against
Rubella for every kid in school: It allows (the internet)school to function more reliably, safely & speedily & efficiently (& thereby more profitably for the businesses that use it). It's a GOOD thing!! Grin
