CANNOT RIP OR BURN CD'S OR DVD'S ANY LONGER - WHAT HAPPENED?

I'm running Windows XP Prof. v 5.1 - serv pak 3 (2007)

I have a DELL EXPERION w/an internal DVD/CD-R drive (Samsung CD-Rom SC-148C) and an outboard Backpack DVD+-R/RW drive.

Until a month ago I could burn and rip cd's and play DVD's via Real Player or WMPlayer (both updated). I haven't done anything radical to the computer that I know of.

Where should I begin to figure this out?

Thanks for your help - CNET Forum is a great resource ...
