Cannot reply, forward or compose in Yahoo! mail

Oct 21, 2004 6:04AM PDT

I recently had my computer fixed after a crash..(re-installed windows xp)..since then I have been able to access, recieve, and read my Yahoo email account, but not send anything out. I click on re, fwd, or compose and the page starts to load, gives an "error on page" at the bottom left and does not work. When I click on the yellow ! a box comes up that says:

Line: 798
char: 7
error: access is denied
code: 0
url: http://us.f127.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose etc...

I can insert addresses, but cannot type in the message box.
Here's the weird thing, in that same window there is a button "send e-card". when I click on that I can send out e-cards with access to my address book and everything.
I have tried changing every setting I can think of in internet options (I have internet explorer 6.0) I have downloaded Java, I have tried everything.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This has been going on for over a month. I know it is my computer because I can send email from other computers.

Yahoo Mail -- Can't Take It Anymore, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dec 23, 2005 8:15PM PST

Sounds like you're having problems similar to me.

I've been using Yahoo Mail for many years, never had a single issue. Then about 2 months ago, all hell broke loose. Suddenly I can't use the Reply, Forward, Search, and various others buttons. I click on them, nothing happens. Basically, most any button that has an associated drop-down menu doesn't work. My Save button under prefs doesn't work either. Under IE, I can see that it's reporting errors on the webpage, something about missing Javascript objects. For some unexplained reason, these errors just won't go away. And it's not just IE, Opera and Firefox are exactly the same. So it certainly appears to be a server-side problem. But strangly I *NEVER* have these problems when accessing my Yahoo Mail account from my wife's PC! Works perfectly, every time, and always has. I'm just about at my wits end w/ Yahoo Mail. I tried someone else's suggestion about clearing the cache of old file/content, which does seem to make a difference at times. But pretty soon the problems return. And sometimes even clearing the cache doesn't help. Then every once in a while, out of the blue, these buttons and drop down menus will start working again, but usually becomes a problem agai within minutes.

As I said, I'm at my wits end. I've been scouring the 'net looking, anywhere, for others having similar problems, then I saw your post. I initially assumed this was some sort of Yahoo screw-up, perhaps they messed up the Javascript, and that it would be straightened out in a few days. But nows it's going on TWO MONTHS of this hell. I can't take it no more, and I can't find ANYONE who can explain what's going on, nor how to correct it. I'm stumped. Even retreating to image copies of my WinXP installation, images that were created long before this problem started, are experiencing the same problem. So this seems to be another indication it's server side related. But then there's my wife's PC, it NEVER has these problems. Same WinXP SP1, same apps, same everything. Nothing particularly different between our PCs that would even begin to explain why here PC seems immune.

I wish I could find someplace were everyone is clearly have the same problems as myself. But it's difficult to do since I'm not sure what's the best way to describe the problem, or what to search on. As a 20 yr software developer, I pretty much solve all my own problems. But this Yahoo Mail thing is becoming hell on earth, and I'm totally aggravated at this point that NO ONE seems to have a clue what the problem is, or a definitive answer. Even the suggestion to change the compose page from graphic to text is only a workaround (you're simply bypassing the troublesome graphic javascript, pr4esumably). Again, this is only circumventing a problem that never seems to get fixed by Yahoo. And it doesn't seem to be affecting everyone, just some people. I can't determine what's common among us unless we can all find each other first! That's half the battle here.

Sorry for the rant, but again, I'm at my wits end. The idea of now having to start all over w/ Gmail or similar, rebuilding folders, filters, etc., is something I dread. But after two months of ZERO progress, I just don't know what else to do. I even posted the problem on the microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support newsgroup some time ago (those posts by Jim are *me*), got almost NO feedback, last I checked, one guy had a similar problem, or else ppl just are finding it. So I don't even know how widespread the problem is. Here's the link, if anyone's interest:

Please, someone, anyone, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

try netscape
May 21, 2006 1:34PM PDT

I had a problem accessing my addressbook when composing an email. A half dozen emails to Yahoo support remained unanswered. Yahoo's support seems to be no-existent.
I was using Mozilla Firefox as my default browser.
In this forum, some people reported solving (different) problems by using Netscape instead of IE as their browser. So I downloaded and installed Netscape 8.1 (free), made it my default browser, and voila! the problem is gone.

FIX: Cannot reply, forward or compose in Yahoo! mail
Sep 17, 2005 2:07PM PDT

this due to spyware...
download X-cleaner from www.tinyurl.com/2bvur.com
click on run and let it scan ur system. when asked to creat restore point click on NO. once its done reboot and check if it works. if it works download Ad-aware from www.tinyurl.com/467LS get the updates and scan volume for ADS and preform a full system scan... if less then 500 objects detected remove and every thing should work fine. if not format/reinstall

Happened to me too
Feb 22, 2006 3:01PM PST

All I did was clear my temporary internet files.
Fixed the problem right up.

I could not reply in Yahoo.
I also could not get to specialized places like ebay motors.

Sites like sports.ebay.com would not let me in.

They all work fine now.

had a similar problem... go to your "options "
Jun 7, 2006 12:14PM PDT

"options" is in the upper right corner on the e-mail page. Then get to where you can change from GRAPHICS to TEXT format. This solved my problem. Hope it helps.

*Deleting temporary internet files fixed it! Thanks Faxxxy!
Jun 10, 2006 5:35AM PDT

I couldn't forward, reply, move, or attach to messages in Yahoo mail. I also couldn't edit my options to text messages only. I went to Tools, Internet Options and deleted my temporary internet files.

This solved the problem!

Uninstall/Reinstall Internet Explorer fixed it for me.
Jun 25, 2006 12:09AM PDT

I tried changing my Yahoo mail options to text, deleting all temporary internet files/cookies, and installing Java. But none of those options worked for me. Then I uninstalled then reinstall Internet Explorer and that fixed the problem. Hope it works for you too.

for me, it was an MTU problem (twice)
Jul 2, 2006 3:32AM PDT

I had this problem last year on two old Win 98 PCs, and fixed it by changing an internet setting called MTU (max transmission unit), to the lowest possible. It worked. (I used a freeware called drtcp (doctor tcp)).

Now I got the same problem on a recently acquired Pentium 4 PC running XP pro (and I forgot how I fixed it last year!!). Not only Yahoo was failing, but bits of eBay too. Not an IE problem, because I use Firefox too.

So I tried everything in this thread, to no avail (except Netscape, but I don't really want a third browser). I started cleaning my PC with an excellent tool called Tune Up Utilities, and in the optimisation settings, it told me my MTU was badly set. I ran the clean up, it reset MTU to another value (I don't know what it chose!) and ... hey presto, Yahoo works properly. (You can get a one month free trial of this software, which means you can fix your Yahoo problem for free if you don't want to buy it).

I'm sure there are other freeware and sharewares, but whatever route you choose, do look at your MTU settings
