Question

Cannot recognise second HD

Jun 15, 2012 8:17PM PDT

My original hard drive (HD1) has Ubuntu 10.04 (Linux) installed. I recently installed a second hard drive (HD2) and installed Windows XP. Both work fine, independently.
Both drives are on the same IDE cable.
I can access all the files on HD2 from Ubuntu (HD 1) but cannot access the files on HD1 from Windows( HD2). Is there any way of accessing HD1 from HD2.

You need

You need a program that can read the Extended3 (Ext3) filesystem being used by Linux. Or if you chose some other filesystem when setting up Linux, then you'll need a program for that filesystem.

My fix

When I do this I copy what files I need to the XP system in some shared folder so I know where to look when I boot XP. Said shared folder is on the NTFS partitions.

Yes, that is what I do but it is a pain if I am in Windows and want to retrieve a file on the other drive.

Then you want some research?

I'm guessing these didn't work for you.

Bob, this is what I asked for in my original question. How could these have worked for me when I didn't know they existed. I had intended to do a search after reading the comment by Jimmy Greystone but hadn't got round to it yet.
Having said that, thank you for the reference.

Graham.

Sorry about that.

I guessed badly so I apologize.

No problem.
Having looked at the site I think that I'll stick to copying files while in Linux. The comment about the possibility of things going wrong if not done correctly put me off.

Installable File Systems are...

As you guess something that Microsoft never did take a liking to. Same story of firewire.
