Cannot print from PC.

Aug 5, 2007 2:07AM PDT

I cannot print to a local lpt1 printer HP laser jet 4 plus or brother MFC-240c fax/printer. OS is Windows XP media center edition (SP2) and both printers were working properly until a couple of weeks ago. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both printers several times with no success. I've tried replacing drivers and replaced cables. I also tried reinstalling the brother's software that comes with the unit, but keep getting new USB device fond but not recognized (unknown device). And I have gone through the windows troubleshooting procedure for both units several times. We had some pretty bad lighting storms in central Florida a couple weeks ago that disrupted our phones, but the PC itself is running fine and all other USB devices (i.e. mouse, keyboard, game controller, etc.) are working properly. Any help or guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt the power outage did anything to it

What does it say in Device Manager? To get there:

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Click Properties
3. Click Hardware
4. Click on Device Manager
5. Then look for either the Printers option or the USB devices tab.

Also, look in the Printers and Faxes folder the the Start menu and let post what you see there

Printer problem

I checked printer port lpt 1 which said is working properly, but still not working and when I turned on the brother's unit it came up USB device not recognized. When I went to device manager under USB connections, it listed it as a unknown device. Under properties it said that no drivers were installed. I also opened up a status monitor for the printer and said it was offline, but in the printer and faxes it showed the printer ready.

Install drivers this way
Aug 5, 2007 5:22PM PDT

1. Go to Device Manager
2. Right click on the unknown USB device with the yellow question mark next to it
3. Click Properties
4. In Properties, click Reinstall driver or Install driver, whichever you see
5. Choose Specify Location
6. Choose the CD-ROM option, I'm assuming that have already put the cd with the drivers in the cd drive
7. The computer will look for the drivers in the CD and install them, this should get the printer going again.

LPT1`

A few months back I ran into the same type of problem. I had to reset the printer to the DOT4 port rather than the LPT1 port. Hope this helps.
