Question

Cannot open exe file?

by toshibasatelitel645user / October 6, 2014 5:57 AM PDT

I cannot open any exe file that i've recently downloaded and im not sure why. Everytime i click on the exe file, nothing happens. I already tried fixing it with the regedit and also the microsoft fixit but both doesnt seemed to work. I noticed that everytime i open the exe file, the windows error reporting service shows up at the task manager under the processes tab. A few seconds later nothing happened. The exe wont open. Does anybody knows why?

There's a lot of malware out there.

If the usual didn't fix it and the fix DOES REQUIRE A REBOOT then the damage sounds deep. Restoring to the factory condition is not unusually in such cases.

You're probably infected with malware

You can do a whole bunch of things to try to track down malware, corrupt files, etc., but chances are you'd spend a whole lot of time with a good chance of not resolving the problem. So I agree with Bob's suggestion to restore to factory settings. Be sure to back up your data first though!

When you've gotten your system back like you want it, I urge you to get yourself an external hard drive and a good 3rd party backup program. You can set it up to do everything automagically at the time and frequency of your choice. 1 TB external hard drives are about $50 these days and a really good FREE backup program is the Easeus Todo Backup Free. That can save you a lot of time and frustration the next time something like this happens. Sooner or later it happens to all computers for one reason or another.

Good luck.

You didn't mention OS or security software, if any, in the system. As one poster mentioned it might be malware related. A pretty good way to find out if it is malware, boot to safe mode with networking and run a Malwarebytes scan in that mode...of course you'll need to have MWB loaded in the system or run it from (a clean load) a FD.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
