Cannot Open .Exe and .Ink Files

May 22, 2007 10:53PM PDT

I haven't the slightest idea as to why, but this morning, when I booted up my computer(Running Windows XP), there was a quick series of "error windows". Not being very skilled in computers, I closed the windows and tried to open a few programs such as a virus scan or other. I noticed that my entire desktop, which is riddled with shortcuts to other folders and files could not be opened, and when opened, came up with a window telling me that "windows cannot open this file". Also, when I tried to open .EXE files, the same prompt as to how it cannot be opened came up. I suspect maybe a virus in my system, byut have no idea as to which one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Apollo215, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

I do what you tell me to: Go to the site, Download the file. But when I try to open the file, I get the "Windows cannot open this file" prompt.

Apollo215, Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

I cant open "command.com"...
Ive tried a bunch of other things, and ive found that i cant open .EXE, .LNK, and .REG. If there are any more, im not sure.
Ive done online scans such as the houscall one, but havent come up with anything more than a few tracking cookies.

See If This Helps..

Click on the link below to download the Fixswen tool. (If you can't download the file on the problem computer, then download it on a "clean" machine, copy it to a floppy, then transfer it over. http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/Fixswen.inf

Once the file is on your desktop, RIGHT click on the file, choose "Install". After installation, it should allow you to open the files in question.

Hope this helps.
