Cannot open doc files by clicking on them

Just recently I've noticed that I can't open a doc file from explorer by clicking on it. Word opens, but to a blank page.I can open files when I open word first and then select the files.
I have win xp pro with microsoft office 2003.
any help would be much appreciated.

My guess: something wrong with the file association of the .doc extension. Or possibly with the dde-mechanism of your OS, but that can be circumvented.
