Cannot install windows xp pro on laptop

by lino / November 4, 2004 10:34 PM PST

I tried to install winxp pro on a Dell laptop and I get as far as the embios. bin file and it won't move from there. I have gone ahead and skipped the file but then windows won't recognize the license. I have an OEM genuine winxp disk that came with my desktop computer. Can anyone help, thanks,Lino

Not all Dell laptops can run XP. You didn't tell what make and model so we can't double check for you.

What OS came with that laptop?

And the killer item is this one -> "I have an OEM genuine winxp disk that came with my desktop computer."

Microsoft enforces the license so it won't install on another piece of hardware. OEM license lock to the OEM hardware...

Yes, thank you Kanishk, the message I get is that the file embios.bin cannot be read. The original O. S. on it was xp pro, but it was bought used and we don't have the original disk. We are trying to use an xp pro disk that came with our new desktop.Lino

In short, I expect this to fail.

Obtain a proper XP CD.
