Cannot install SP2

I have spent too many hours trying to figure this out, so I am hoping someone can help me...

I did a clean install of Windows XP Home yesterday. I had no problems and as soon as it booted up, it told me to update Windows files, so I did. Initially there were a bunch of general updates. After I installed those, rebooted, it told me to install SP2.

Don't know if this matters....Initially, I could not find my product key. The manual said it would be on the back of my computer, but it was not. I used 2 different online sites to retrieve the key from my PC prior to re-installing. They both gave the same response, so this is the key that I used. This is the original software that came with my computer...

Whenever I try to install SP2, it just says that it failed... I have tried searching online for answers, but I am at a dead end.

something else I forgot to mention, sp2 will not install if windows
version is not genuine... check first to be sure you have a genuine version.

Was that all the message said?

Generally on a cleanly installed version of Windows XP, SP2 would have no problems installing. The usual problem people had was with infected systems, and the advice has always been that a system had to be squeaky clean of all viruses and spyware before attempting to upgrade to SP2. But with yours, after a clean install, (not just a repair install), this should not have been a problem. There were compatibility issues with SP2, but if you already had SP2 previously I would assume that your computer had no problems with compatibility.

However, you didn't give much detail about your system or the history.

Can you tell us;

1] Why did you have to clean install Windows XP?

2] Is this an OEM version of Windows? (That is, purchased the computer from a shop, or online outlet, with Windows XP Home already installed).

3] When you finished the clean install, was Windows working properly?

4] Before you went online to download the updates, what protection did you use, eg firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware?

Perhaps that can help us track the problem down.
