If you plug in the printer before the HP software has been installed, then when you install the HP software, it may not detect the printer. Try this:
Unplug the printer
Uninstall the printer from the device manager
Install the HP Printer Software (either from the CD or downloaded from the HP website)
When the HP software says plug in the printer, plug in the printer
If nothing happens, then check the "I will plug in the USB printer later" so that the install can finish.
In device manager, right click anywhere and select "Scan for new hardware" (this should find the printer)
I have a Dell Win XP System and a new HP C4795 Photosmart wireless printer. When you plug in the printer, the PC recognizes that it's there, but does not begin an autoinstall.
When I click on the remove hardware icon, it indicates that it's safe to remove the hardware and gives me the correct model number, so I know that XP has detected the printer.
When I try to add the printer manually via the control panel "add a printer", it does not recognize it.
I also installed the standard HP printer software that came with the printer and direct connected the printer. When it would get to the point in the installation where it should recognize the printer, the installation fails.
I know the Printer is OK. I've been using it with 2 other PCs in my home and it works fine.
Any suggestions welcomed.
