Question

Cannot install a new OS on a blank hard drive

Oct 21, 2015 3:59PM PDT

Ok, first off I was having problems with my pc and since I couldn't get it to boot, I took out the hard drive and attached it to another pc hoping to clear it and get a fresh install of a new but not Windows type OS. Well I thought I had done everything right by using Unetbootin to download the iso file of Zorin straight to my hard drive but when I go to put it in my pc I get the NTLDR is missing message. I tried to download a boot repair disk to a USB memory stick and then tried to reboot and still same error. Can someone please help me solve my problem; I have been at this for 2 days with no luck?

I'd forgot that

Zorin is good, but a total newbie to Linux needs extra support in the first year in forums like Ubuntu provides for all the "buntus". Zorin's been moving up in the rankings, maybe if the team expands a bit, get more depth. I suggest them from time to time, but usually for someone with a wee bit of experience in linux or repair CD's, etc. I gave my teen a chance to try out both Zorin and Lubuntu, and to my surprise she preferred Lubuntu! Teens, you just never know...

I got the OS on the HD
Oct 22, 2015 7:03PM PDT

Ok I did finally get the HD loaded with an OS. I used Lubuntu. I hooked up my HD to my daughter's pc and unhooked hers and then booted it from the USB memory stick. It worked. So I installed the OS on my HD before unhook in it and putting it back in my pc. Did have a problem with it recognizing my wireless adapter but fixed that. Now the problem I have is, Firefox cannot connect to the server. I get this error everytime. Idk what to do know. I have been looking all over the net with no success. Guess when I have a problem, I really have a problem...

Connecting vs Communicating
Oct 22, 2015 7:32PM PDT

I suspect you don't have your wifi setup to communicate with your router. Check the settings on the router (SSID, encryption method, hex or passphrase) and make sure the Linux wifi has those settings entered for it's wifi connection. You can "connect" to a wifi source, but can't "communicate" unless the encryption method matches it. Until that happens, no programs which access the internet will be able to.

Newbie Easy Way

Download this onto a windows computer and use it.

You can format the USB flashdrive and also have persistence set to 4GB size or less. This will download the ISO file and install it to the USB flashdrive.

You can then boot to the USB flashdrive on your other computer after changing your boot order to the USB drive and be running a LIVE version of Linux.

You will see an install icon on that desktop. Since you want to use the entire hard drive for Linux, then allow it to also Format the drive during the install.

Once that's completed, then change your boot order back to the hard drive, remove the USB flashdrive and boot the computer to your Linux OS.

Thank you all!!!
Oct 23, 2015 6:39AM PDT

I want to thank you all for the help..I am now back online and everything seems to be going good. I had to edit my connection and i checked the boxes under IPv4 & IPv6 stating to require the addressing to complete the connection. And it worked. I had seen that before but didn't do anything cuz didn't think it mattered. But as I can see, I guess it did. Happy

Thanks bunches!
