Cannot get rid of WinME Boot Menu

by andrewnz / June 22, 2005 12:44 PM PDT

I have read a number of postings about this and none of the solutions work.
1st I could not see msdos.sys in Windows until I went to DOS and cleared its attributes (-h -s -r)
The contents of my msdos.sys file are:
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\Windows
WinBootDir=C:\Windows
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootGUI=1
BootMenu=0

Also msconfig is on Normal startup and in Advanced the ''Enable start menu'' is not ticked.

I have read the post from Microsoft on the contents of MSDOS.SYS and have tried various combintations of parameters.
Getting annoyed Sad
Please help if you can.

Can't help.

Since I can't see the MSDOS.SYS contents, I can't see if it's there.

Tell more about this menu so we are clear that it's the usual.

Sorry for not posting that detail in original message.
Am not near that machine right now but this from another post is pretty much it:
1. normal
2.boot...
3. safe mode
4. step by step config.

Looking forward to some assistance Happy

The MSDOS.SYS, SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files and even your HIJACKTHIS log file for all to see.

Right now, I have nothing to work with.

;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).

Here is my WIN.INI file in its entirety
It DID have a reference Safemode=1
I changed this to Safemode=0 (no luck)
I deleted any reference to safemode (no luck)

Do you have TweakUI installed?
by TONI H / June 24, 2005 10:37 PM PDT

If so, there is a tab there regarding the boot menu and I'm wondering if you have that enabled?

MSDOS.SYS looks incorrect.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / June 25, 2005 12:03 AM PDT

It looks "short". Odd things happen if it's under so many bytes and your paste doesn't have the needed byte count.

I can't tell you why it's required because Microsoft never issues the Windows ME Resource Kit. Microsoft only points out that so many bytes are required in the MSDOS.SYS file.

Tell how the hard disk was prepared. I wonder if it was prepared with something other than a Windows ME boot diskette.

So sorry for wasting your time ....problem identified
by andrewnz / June 26, 2005 6:36 PM PDT

I must apologise profusely for the time you have spent on this. I thought I had covered all my bases so well before posting the original problem.

I was aware of the need for the MSDOS.SYS file to exceed 1024bytes and that was in fact my downfall. When opening the file in Notepad it displayed the ''filler lines'' after all the command lines....and I never thought to look beyond those lines.

I went to check out the file size because I knew it exceeded the required 1024 bytes and was SO SURE I would rule out that as the problem.....

Here is the ENTIRE msdos.sys file (including the lines I did not originally scroll down to - in ALL the times I edited the file!!!!!!!!!)

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\Windows
WinBootDir=C:\Windows
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootGUI=1
BootMenu=0
;
;The following lines are required for compatibility with other programs.
;Do not remove them (MSDOS.SYS needs to be >1024 bytes).
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxa
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxb
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxc
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxd
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxe
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxf
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxg
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxh
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxi
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxj
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxk
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxm
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxn
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxo
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxp
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxq
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxr
;xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxs
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.90.3000
BootMenu=1

By not scrolling beyond the filler lines I did not see these last three lines!

And I thought I was so smart Sad

I apologise for wasting your time on such a trivial (user) error.

I didn't say thank you in my other post.

Thank you for your time and patience.

You're welcome and thank you too!

In reply to: and thanks

I apologize if I seemed pushy to see those files (in their entirety), but it's how we uncover such things.

No need to apologize, the system and this forum worked.

The Samsung RF23M8090SG

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
