Cannot get "Preview" to open

Apr 6, 2008 10:44PM PDT

Under "Apple Hot News", I read of the interesting things one can do with "Preview". I thought I would have a look at them, but unfortunately I cannot get "Preview" to open. It is in "Applications" and I can get "info" about it, but it won't open! I get an Error Code message - 10657. Help, please!

"Preview" not opening

Unfortunately no joy with "Repair Permissions", Mr McFixit.

Don't you hate it when that happens?

take a look at a program called Pacifist.

I may enable you to install just the Preview.app from the OS X installation disks.

It displays the contents of .pkg files and shows the installers for each app.

"Preview not opening"
Apr 8, 2008 2:41AM PDT

I certainly do - having read in Buckley & Clark's excellent "Rough Guide" that when a file or folder won't open, having checked it's not "locked", then Disk Utility and "Repair Permissions" is the way.
Anyway, although it is tedious, I Backed-Up and made a clean re-install of Leopard. Restoring my last Back-Up, I avoided restoring "Applications". I found that after the clean re-install, I had "Preview" in my Applications. However, it would not open. I tried "Repair Permissions" again. I got a message -
"User differs on SYSTEM/LIBRARY/FRAMEWORKS/JAVA VM.FRAMEWORK/VERSIONS 1.5.0"
I checked "info" on Preview and it reads "You have Custom Access" !
What this all means, I haven't a clue!

Preview not opening

mrmacfixit,,
I am afraid I must admit my ignorance and apologise for any of your valuable time I may have thereby wasted. My inability to open "Preview" was,I now find, entirely due to my not understanding how it "worked". I had been clicking on the icon and nothing was happening. I have now discovered, after two days of frustration, that any PICTURE (and for all I know yet, OTHER THINGS OF SIMILAR NATURE), that I open, ARE OPENED(by default) by "Preview". I can then do all the things mentioned in the Apple article!
I hope no-one at CNet will hold this against me when, in future, as I know I shall, I need help with something. Many thanks.

Ahh, how refreshing,

someone who discovers what the problem is, admits the problem was of their own making and takes the time to apologize.

Apology accepted without reservation.

i hope you won't mind if I chuckle, now and again.

Happy

Don't let this stop you, we have all been guilty of it at some time
