Question

Cannot get internet on Android phone since re-setting

Jul 31, 2018 8:14AM PDT

The phone is an LG Android (Tracfone). I used to be able to open Google Chrome on it and pull up websites. Then the battery wasn't holding a charge for very long so I did a factory reset. After that, I tried to pull up Chrome. I got a screen telling me I need to setup Google and to click OK to add an account. That got me stuck on "Checking Info". So, following some info I found googling, I tried logging out of my Google account on the computer. That didn't work. I tried to click No Thanks on the add Google account screen popup (instead of Add Account). That made the "Checking Info" go away but still no internet, no Chrome. I've tried typing in web addresses. That doesn't work. How can I get my internet/Chrome restored to working on my phone? Right now if I tap on Chrome I get "This webpage is not available" (showing mail.google.com). So I guess my question is how to I get internet on my Android smart phone.

Clarification Request
Did you set the APN information for Tracfone?

You're probably right

Well, yes. I am a novice when it comes to the phone. Do I need to connect to WiFi everywhere I go to use Chrome? I don't remember doing this but I didn't really use it all that much.

It's best to connect to WiFi since data on Tracfone costs.

So for me I'd connect to WiFi when I can. As to using your data plan, the APN must be correct and can be lost if you reset almost any phone. That's why a lot of folk end up at a service counter for a tech to set it again. It's not that hard if you can find your carrier APN settings (I use google to find it.)

As to WiFi needed to use Chrome, once you get the APN right and your plan has data available, then it should work.

No APN settings update required

On Tracfone's website it says "This device does not require an update to its APN settings". So how do I connect to the internet? I go into Wi Fi and I get this list that keeps jumping around and all of the Wi Fi's listed require a password. The one that didn't require a password has disappeared. And it didn't work.

Tracfone has hundreds of models.

And many require you buy data to get data over cellular. As to WiFi, I wonder if you need a short explainer about open and password protected hotspots? Just because it shows the hotspot doesn't mean you can use it. You would have to ask the owner permission.

As to the Tracfone, I can't find more than "LG".

Oh, there's no data
Aug 1, 2018 3:21PM PDT

Well I just checked and the account has no data. So if I buy data, can I freely use the internet the same as the phone itself or do I have to be in the vicinity of a Wi Fi which has given me permission to use it?

I wouldn't use the word "freely".

Why? You paid for it and it's pretty easy to use up the bytes you paid for.

So the answer is "You can use the internet when there is data in your plan and the cell tower supports it."

As to the WiFi all skill levels arrive here so yes, if someone gives you WiFi access it works according to the limits and rules they set in their router.

it works

Well, that was it. I added data to my account and now the internet works.

When I said "freely", I didn't mean "without payment". I meant without connecting to a Wi Fi. As I said in an earlier post, I did not have to connect to a Wi Fi to get internet on the phone before I did this reset. So after the reset I'm just checking the internet to see if it works and it doesn't work. So I'm thinking the reset has caused the problem. This is the first time ever I have run out of data. And it happened to occur when I reset the phone. Live and learn.

I didn't get a message saying there is no data. That would have helped.

Sorry for the trouble.
