cannot download w.7. updates - continued

Feb 25, 2016 2:05AM PST

Hello Bob,

Even though I left the trhread open, I was not able to reply or enter a comment, so once again I have had to start a new thread .- apologies.

I finally managed to get the downloads to show with their KB numbers and started the download at just after midnight!
here were over 90 and I chose 78. Due to the advertising of W 10, I had not downloaded since the beginning of November!

Having checked those that were apropriate to mty programmes, I clicked 'Acept' I found that they were downloading and installing.
I left the laptop to "do it's thing'" and it had shut down when I came to start it up this morning.

It gave the notice that I was not to shut it down as it was configuring windows. It showed it's progress in %'s and then closed down, restarting two separate times. On the second re-start it went through the same routine but when it came to Initiating there was a black screen which stayed there for over 15 minutes.
I hit the shut-off button and then started it again, this time it went through the 'wait while Windows is configured' etc, and finally after what semed like ages, it started! It's is now working, but everything takes a long time to function!

Thanks for all your help. I ave reconfigured the downloads to let me choose whether to download and install, as you suggested.

Kind regards,

Colinito.

What advertising in 10?
Feb 25, 2016 7:26AM PST

I had a fresh install of W10 and after I changed the home page of Edge that area of ads went away. It's been a source of mystery to me that claim of advertising since it's just the home browser page. You did see advertising like that in Firefox when you opened a new blank page (yes, the internet flamed on about that too.)

-> Yes, a machine does slow during updates.

I have my machines set to automatic update Seems fine.

What advertising in 10?
Feb 25, 2016 11:34AM PST

Hello Bob,

Pardon any confusion I may have caused to you! When I referred to the advertising of W 10, I was referring to the continual pop-up notices that regularly appear on the monitor above the clock when I startup, urging me to update to W 10, and the Windows Update page opening up with only the W 10 download showing and no clear way to find any updates for W7.

This has now been achieved and, as I explained in my last post, they have been installed.
In the past I had my updates choice as show me the updates and let me decide to download and install. (Somehow, this last time, they started Installing automatically! Luckily I had checked what I wanted to Install first!)

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Colinito

Maybe there's reasons my we don't see it.
Feb 25, 2016 11:52AM PST

Here I only saw a pop about one drive (don't use) and we don't use the new email login.

I wish I saw this on the dozen or more W10 machines around the office. It's sort of a mystery to us here.

As to the GWX offer, that is one well done discussion. But your reply is about advertising in 10.

The move to 10 here has been great. We're moving to 10 all over now. But again, we don't use the email login.
