General discussion

Cannot download from CNET

Feb 22, 2011 7:53PM PST

Here's hoping the problem is being addressed. I was unable to download anything from CNET.com starting a few weeks ago. (XP w/ IE Cool When I clicked on "Download" the screen would flash and reload but it returned to the same screen. I also noticed the "Sort By" selection button had the same reaction. Today the "Sort By" button does function and rearranges the downloads accordingly. Keeping my fingers crossed.....

Nope, my IE 8 will not download http://download.cnet.com/Freemake-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-75218346.html . When I click on the "Download Now" button, I do get a new page that says "Your download will begin in a moment," but the typical download box fails to appear. I should add, however, that another download is possible on this same page at avs4you.com where the avs video editor can be downloaded. This download button is active so that I could download it if I desired, which I do not. However, if no else has reported a continuing problem, I suggest that you consider yourselves a success. It could be some anomaly in my own computer and IE 8. In any case, thanks for looking into the problem.

It is happening here too for that particular download...

It happened a couple times in a row for me using Firefox 4. Hit Refresh a few times and it was a success on the fourth try. However, it seems to be working on the first try for all other products, and the main issue from this thread was never known to affect Firefox 4, so it may be a separate, isolated issue.

Hmmm...

John, but other titles that you tried worked fine in FF4?

As long as you get a redirected page in IE8 double check the security bar display message. (at the top of the page after the redirected page is displayed) It sounds like your security settings require a manual "OK to download" verification before your browser will allow the file to download......the original download failure stemmed from a redirect failure that doesn't sound like it is happening to you anymore...

Ute62 see Jim__B post and let us know if that's the case...

Once you allow the download, does the download box appear?

Let us know.

Yes, the security bar does appear on the redirected page, and yes, I do disable it. The results I have been describing have been obtained with it disabled and the download box still does not appear. I thought it interesting that http://download.cnet.com/Freemake-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-75218346.html would not download, but for avs4you.com link which appeared on the same page the box does appear and would download.

Ute62 - Security bar

I could be incorrect but at the point of download on my system "disable" is not available. You have to change your IE security level to "Custom" and configure your browser security settings manually to prevent the bar from appearing. Since your bar does appear I assume your Popup blocker is set to off. When the security bar appears after selecting "Download Now" try selecting "Download File" and see if the download proceeds normally. I suspect you also may have an adware plugin in your browser. My final redirected CNET download page does not have any imbedded links to avs4you.com

Morning, sorry just checked my email and saw this continuning thread. I was one of the original posters from last month, that said I couldn't download on IE8 and was able to do so on Google Chrome. I just tested the 2 downloads (Glary Utilities and Advanced SystemCare) on IE8 and it was successful. Thank you CNET for following up on this.
