General discussion

Cannot download from CNET

Feb 22, 2011 7:53PM PST

Here's hoping the problem is being addressed. I was unable to download anything from CNET.com starting a few weeks ago. (XP w/ IE Cool When I clicked on "Download" the screen would flash and reload but it returned to the same screen. I also noticed the "Sort By" selection button had the same reaction. Today the "Sort By" button does function and rearranges the downloads accordingly. Keeping my fingers crossed.....

You found a temporary workaround...
Feb 25, 2011 12:52PM PST

Specifically, you can replace the "3000" in the URL with "3001" to switch from the information page to the download page. That means you can download from CNET, but doesn't shed any light on the cause. If you would, right-click the Download Now link on one of those "3000" pages and copy the link location (URL), pasting it here. Note that that's not necessarily the same URL that you'll end up as if you click the link, so it is important to differentiate the two. I am hoping to find out if all affected parties are receiving the same type of link, which should indicate whether this is a Javascript issue, a redirect issue, or a bad link issue.

did not work
Feb 26, 2011 11:46PM PST

I did as you requested and changed the URL and replaced the "3000" in the URL with "3001" and it redirected back to the "3000" page, again, this is only when I am in IE, on Google Chrome it works fine and I can download

http://download.cnet.com/Glary-Utilities/3000-2094_4-10508531.html

I manually changed it to "3001" and still redirects back to "3000".

this is the link that you requested from when I right-click on Download Now link - this is for Glary Utilities (free):
http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2094_4-10508531&ontId=2094_4&spi=445438d46080ded19ef5e9ddd83302a1&lop=link&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=11740366&mfgId=6280556&merId=6280556&pguid=VFpy3QoOYJAAAHhn9sMAAAE6&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-2094_4-10508531.html%3Fspi%3D445438d46080ded19ef5e9ddd83302a1

This is the other link (after right-click on "Download Now" for the other download I was trying to retrieve since we started this thread - this is for Advance SystemCare (free):
http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2086_4-10407614&ontId=2086_4&spi=797fd859a1c9cbe12e8183c1137cc7af&lop=link&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=11666513&mfgId=6271865&merId=6271865&pguid=bpROIQoOYJAAAHhnK-sAAAEj&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-2086_4-10407614.html%3Fspi%3D797fd859a1c9cbe12e8183c1137cc7af

Thanks and I hope this helps.

Same problem here with FreeMake and FF
Feb 25, 2011 4:44PM PST

Google search led me here , as I am trying to solve the same problem specifically with the FREEMAKE video converter download link

I keep trying to download from http://download.cnet.com/Freemake-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-75218346.html

and it leads me in circles right back to the same page.

I have
Vista home premium-Fire Fox

Tried fixes

Turning off JAVA in FF = no fix
Turned off ABP = no fix
Changed the 3000 to 3001 in URL = no fix

I already have an older version of Freemake VID CONV
and the website redirects me for the newer version (TO CNET DOWNLOAD)

But the page just loads again , no download

It was an abused privilege in the past...
Feb 26, 2011 7:13AM PST

It is an often-requested feature, but too many users abused it in the past when posting spam, asking for help with piracy, engaging in personal attacks toward other users, et cetera. It also generated confusion when memberB replied to memberA, but then memberA edited his/her post such that memberB's reply made no sense. The feature may restored at some point in the future, but as it stands it remains available only to forum administrators.

Same Issue
Mar 11, 2011 10:14AM PST

I have the same issue and am unable to download anything from download/cnet.com.

I am running Windows XP, with IE 8 and Sun Java.

I haven't hand any problems until about a month ago and there has been no change.

I hope you guys are still working on this...

Thank you
Mar 18, 2011 1:09PM PDT

Thank you for looking into this problem. I'm having the same issue as others in both IE 8.0 and FF 3.6.15. Like others have mentioned, the Download button working perfectly in Google Chrome. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit on a Dell Latitude E6500 laptop. Beside the various link URLs, what other kind of information do you think would help in your investigation?

Thanks,
Jen

html vs htm
Mar 27, 2011 12:24AM PDT

I right clicked on "Download Now", copied the shortcut (to download FLV Player) and pasted it into the IE* address bar

http://dw.com.com/redir?edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-13632_4-10467081&ontId=13632_4&spi=de74b92b10ff94480632036580d80ae9&lop=link&ltype=dl_dlnow&pid=10985279&mfgId=6277687&merId=6277687&pguid=aN2TsQoOYI4AABXVPVgAAAGo&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.cnet.com%2F3001-13632_4-10467081.html%3Fspi%3Dde74b92b10ff94480632036580d80ae9

By just changing the html to htm near the end of the address, I was able to download the file successfully (whether or not Java sun - Use JRE 1.6.0_24 was enabled or not).

UPDATE: Chrome works
Mar 10, 2011 2:32PM PST

I had to entirely uninstall FreeMakeVC then install Chrome to download FreeMake video converter.

Also I noticed while in FF browser FREEMAKE now doesn't redirect to CNET it gives you a download option now on their end.

Yeah but..........
Mar 21, 2011 3:24PM PDT

Like Jukenson I was able to use his link/url to get download in my Firefox 3.6 but it is a major hassle that after a week with new computer I not only had the sort issue with IE and Firefox but was able to DL in chrome.Yeah just what I want a third browser.A lot of this is above my head but it is kind of lousy that CNET does not have a fix so any version with IE/FF and Chrome. But at least in latter I can use reviews and DL mirror (crucial because many freeware folks seem to use it without one of their own). Will keep up on this and hope (beyond having to hassle with learning 7 and Live crap I can get back to other aspects of life).Thing is Chrome is really fast and like the flexible search bar but it lacks some feature I am used to in FF or I,again.will have leaning curve to find how to use.Again hats off to people that found work around but feel CNET should fix this since I had it with XP and now 7.

Apr 5, 2011 11:54AM PDT

I had this problem, and fixed it. Simply look in the http:// line, find the number 3000, and change it to 3001. Press enter. Bingo.

What a pain in the #$%, though.

Update folks! Please read
Apr 7, 2011 8:46AM PDT

Hey everyone,

I just got word from the Download team that they implemented some changes to fix the issue that many of you were seeing while attempting to download something from our site.

Can you all give it another try and see if the fix they implemented is actually working for you? And report your finding here.

This will help them out in confirming their changes actually solved the problem.

Your help is appreciated!

Just a Test
Apr 8, 2011 1:50AM PDT

My first posting is #6 on Feb. 24 when I reported being unable to download at http://download.cnet.com/Freemake-Video-Converter/3000-2194_4-75218346.html with Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.6. In posting #9 (Feb. 25, 2011) I reported being successful using Google Chrome. At your request, I again tried downloading the same program with my Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.6. Sadly, it was unsuccessful with Explorer 8, but I am happy to report that it did download with Firefox 3.6. Is this a 'cup half full' or a 'cup half empty' thing?

Hmmm can you please try one more time?
Apr 8, 2011 8:12AM PDT

I had a co-worker try it in IE8 and it worked fine using IE8.

Thanks!
