Question

Cannot Download AbiWord

Aug 2, 2011 11:01PM PDT

I was working in AbiWord one day, when I decided to fiddle with what option to use to open the print preview. I changed the default to Internet Explorer and after that, the print preview didn't work any more. I couldn't figure out how to bring it back to the default, so I decided to uninstall AbiWord, then reinstall it to see if the print preview came back. So I uninstalled the program. Then I ran CCleaner to get rid of unneeded files and clean the registry. Now I can't download AbiWord again. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Clarification Request
Cannot downolad AbiWord
Jan 3, 2012 4:37AM PST

I am trying to download from the CNET website. But each time I click on the Download button, a box comes up wanting me to choose an application. I have never had this issue when downloading anything else. (I'm using the latest Firefox and when I choose it, the download still doesn't work. Pity, because that AbiWord looks very good. Oh well.

Cannot Download AbiWord
Aug 3, 2011 4:16PM PDT

At download.com, on first try, I get "cnet_abiword-setup-2_8_6_exe.exe couldn't be downloaded." Then, on retry, I get "cnet_abiword-setup-2_8_6_exe.exe might have been moved or deleted."

Thank you, Mark, have already downloaded the program using IE9. The program is working fine, except for one item: Print Preview. Nothing happens when I click on it. If anyone can show me how to fix this, I will be eternally grateful.

For Print Preview to work

I think a printer driver must be installed and you have selected a printer as default. Same thing happens with Word way back when.

Since Print Preview attempts to render the document as it would be printed from the printer, I'm guessing a printer has to be connected, (and any printer software installed), and the printer selected as default.

AbiWord Print Preview malfunction
Jan 10, 2012 1:17PM PST

Printer is properly installed and selected as default.
Let me rephrase what I said earlier. When I click Print Preview, a new window pops up with the heading 'View Downloads - Windows Internet Explorer'. A file name with letters and numbers and .tif extension is listed. To the right, two buttons give you the options to Open or Save. Clicking Open does nothing. Anyway, this is not the correct window to pop up.
However, I can get around this glitch by checking the box next to Print Preview in my printer's Properties. When I click Print, the correct preview window pops up.
Thank you all for the time taken.

Latest version is from 2010.
Lemme divulge a secret: the program I downloaded is malfunctioning because of something I did when I was on the preview page: I selected an option for printing the document from a dropdown menu that I evidently shouldn't have. The preview function has not worked since, even though I uninstalled and reinstalled the program.

Then back to mother.

Abiword may have some item similar to Word's Normal.Dot that we delete when things like this happen. It appears the app works ok besides this so for now my suggestion is back to Abiword's support to see what they offer.
