Cannot disable program

Feb 15, 2004 3:08AM PST

I cannot disable a program that loads on startup. I have unchecked the box for it in msconfig startup, but it comes back the next time I boot the computer or double click on the program icon on the desktop. It is the Verizon Online Support Center for my DSL line. I noticed too that there are two listings for this program in the startup menu of msconfig. Only one is checked at any time.

Windows 98SE

There are those programs that are programmed to check if they are run at start up, and - if not - do it themselves. This seems to be one of those, if I read your post well.

Three things to do:
1. Cleanup the msconfig menu. You can do so with regedit (remove the item from both the Run and the RUN- list) or with a utility called Starter, I've read about here.
2. Check the Options menu of the program to see if it has a configurable option to 'load at startup' or 'show in system tray' or the like.
3. Contact Verizon to see if they can do anything about it.

Hope this helps.

I found that there is a Verizon Online Support Center listed in the startup folder and one in the disabled startup items folder under programs. If I delete the one in the startup folder, what would happen? Verizon was not much help.

rmcarl, Delete the one in the Startup folder and let it in the Recycle Bin and restart your computer and see what happens. If any problems occurr you can always restore it from the Recycle Bin. What is the name of that file including the extension?

Did as you suggested Larry and that did the trick. Thanks for the reply and the support. I forgot that if I deleted the file it would go to the recycle bin. C:\PROGRA~1\VERIZO~1\SUPPOR~1\BIN\MATCLI.EXE
Also want to thank Kees too.
